HOW SHOULD THE BBC BE RUN? AND HAS GREG DYKE GOT IT RIGHT?

news |
Open discussion at the National Union of Journalists Wednesday September 8, 2pm - 5pm at the NUJ Head Office, 308 Grays Inn Road, London WC1. Organised by the NUJ and the Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom. The NUJ and the CPBF have both called for the BBC to be more democratically controlled, but how precisely?

The current debate over the renewal of the BBC Charter has put the Board of Governors in the line of fire. Its role in the Hutton debacle was widely criticised - but what kind of body should it they be? How should its members be appointed, and what should be their powers? The issue is topical because of discussions around the Charter renewal - and it became even more so last weekend with the publication of extracts from Greg Dyke’s memoirs., with his accusation that a clique of governors were able to force him out and attempt to hijack news and current affairs - our everyday work.

This special discussion will be chaired by NUJ President Jim Corrigall and led by Professor Sylvia Harvey of Lincoln University, an expert on the governance of the BBC. Admission is free but places are limited. Contact the Journalist magazine office on 0207 843 3701 or 3710 to reserve a place.
