Public meeting - Media in the age of mass surveillance

events |

Wednesday 13 August 6.30pm - 9.00pm. 16 Acton Street, London WC1X 9NG

The Coalition for Media Pluralism is hosting a discussion of the role of the media in the age of mass surveillance. Following the revelations through documents leaked by Edward Snowden in June 2013 of the unprecedented scale and scope of US and UK government domestic and foreign surveillance, and the subsequent moves by the UK government against the Guardian and those associated with the publication and reporting of the leaks, we will discuss the implications for the effective functioning of a free press and the ability of the media to hold those in power to account.

Speakers: Sara Ogilvie, Liberty; Christian Fuchs, University of Westminster; and Richard Keeble, University of Lincoln. Further speakers to be announced and refreshments provided.
