Bullying- Stopping the Silence...
podcasts |The media and arts industries are often seen as glamorous; however, a recent survey commissioned by the Federation of Entertainment Unions has shown that bullying and harassment in the workplace is rife. In this latest podcast Claire Colley speaks to two campaigners about The Creating without Conflict campaign and the need for change in the workplace.
The FEU recently commissioned a survey examining bullying, harassment and discrimination in the entertainment and media industries and concluded that they were hotspots for this kind of behaviour. Many workers are freelances or work on short-term contracts, with few statutory rights and a culture of silence about this abuse has been allowed to thrive.
The Creating without Conflict campaign has therefore been launched by the FEU which comprises the National Union of Journalists, BECTU, Equity, Musicians' Union, Professional Footballers' Association, Writers' Guild and Unite, to raise awareness of bullying. Although the spotlight has focused on the BBC since the post-Saville Rose Review, which uncovered a culture where inappropriate behaviour had gone unchallenged, this new campaign focuses on how all those working in the creative and media industries can confront work practices and cultures that lead to harassment and looks at methods to organise collectively to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect.
