for diverse, democratic and accountable media
Rupert Murdoch’s bid to buy up the whole of BSkyB will have a disastrous effect on the balance of the British media. This is the message from Radio Free Press, a new podcast from the CPBF.
Presented by former BBC political correspondent Nick Jones (pictured), Radio Free Press will bring out podcasts with experts and campaigners talking in depth about vital media issues.
This first podcast looks at the rise and rise of the Murdoch empire – the global company New Corporation that is the biggest publisher of national newspapers and is bidding for complete control of Sky TV.
The result – if LibDem Business Secretary Vince Cable gives the nod to the takeover – would be the most powerful single media voice in almost any western country.
Joining Nick Jones in the 35-minute discussion are
Labour MP AUSTIN MITCHELL – a former TV journalist himself, a one-time presenter of Yorkshire TV’s award-winning news programme Calendar.
STEVEN BARNETT, professor of communications at Westminster University, a leading media commentator, a columnist on the Observer and an adviser to a Parliamentary media committee.
PAT HOLLAND, lecturer in media at Bournemouth University and author of books and articles about television history, and
The editor of Free Press, TIM GOPSILL.
The podcast was produced by CLAIRE COLLEY.
Radio Free Press is a campaigning service, aimed at informing people who are concerned to preserve independent, diverse and accountable media in the UK. Please pass the link to the podcast on to colleagues, friends and fellow campaigners.
