Taming the Media Moguls

events |

7.00 pm, Wednesday 23 November
Working Class Movement Library The Crescent, Salford M5 4WX.
In 1986 Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, backed by a Tory government, sacked his staff and got rid of the unions to run a belligerent right-wing newspaper group. 25 years later the lies, the bullying and the corruption have caught up with him. Now, in the aftermath of the News of the World voicemail-hacking scandal, there's a chance to tame the big corporations, for fairer and better media to give the public the news they need.
Speakers:
• TONY BURKE, Assistant general secretary, Unite the Union
• ANN FIELD, retired national officer of Unite/GPM
• GRANVILLE WILLIAMS, Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom
• THAIS PORTILHO-SHRIMPTON, Hacked Off! campaign
• JOHN BAILEY, Former union rep on the Sun, active in the Right to Reply campaign
At 6.00pm there will be a reception and guided tour of the much-praised exhibition 'Wapping: the Workers' Story', commemorating the 25th anniversary of the year-long strike by 5,500 workers sacked by Murdoch at Wapping.
