events |

7.00pm Tuesday 16 July
Committee Room 18 House of Commons, Westminster.

At his first press conference Iranian president-elect Hassan Rohani was asked about the closure of the office of the Association of Iranian Journalists and he replied that “guilds and associations are the best way to run social affairs of the society."

The National Union of Journalists and its international federation (IFJ) want to ensure that journalists in Iran benefit from this window of opportunity for change. The NUJ event will bring together Iranian journalists, trade union leaders and members of parliament to discuss how to support colleagues, press freedom and trade unions in the country.

The guest speaker for the event is Ali Mazrooei, the Association of Iranian Journalists (AoIJ) president.

The NUJ is supporting journalists in Iran, campaigning for an independent media and taking steps to encourage the re-establishment of the Association of Iranian Journalists that was shut down as part of the media clampdown in 2009.
