Rally for Suzanne Breen

publications |

The NUJ is holding a rally in support of Suzanne Breen, the Belfast journalist facing court proceedings to force her to disclose confidential information.

Suzanne's court hearing will be in Belfast in June (postponed from 29 May) and is flying in for the meeting, which is at the NUJ HQ, 308 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8DP (near Kings Cross station), at 6.30 pm on Tuesday 26 May.

Speakers:

SUZANNE BREEN, Northern Ireland editor, Sunday tribune

BILL GOODWIN, News editor, Computer Weekly, who refused to betray a source in 1989 and won the NUJ-backed landmark case on protection of sources at the European Court of Human Rights in 1996.

SIR GEOFFREY BINDMAN, leading media lawyer who was solicitor in the Goodwin case.
JO GLANVILLE, editor, Index on censorship
MARK STEPHENS, well-known media lawyer.
plus NUJ speakers

There will be a protest picket at the Northern Ireland Office in London at the same time as the Belfast hearing, which will now take place in June. Details, not yet finalised, will be at www.nuj.org.uk - where there is also background info on the case.

Please also sign the online petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/protectsources?
and send messages of support to protectsources@nuj.ie

This is a vital case for press freedom and the NUJ's long-standing policy in support of members who protect confidential sources.
