After a year which saw the biggest trade union protest in a generation as public sector workers demanded protection for their pensions, the Trades Union Congress is preparing to face 2012 and a set of challenges as great as anything in the decade of Margaret Thatcher's government.

How do the unions intend to present their case in a worsening economic and political climate in the face of an often hostile news media?  Nicholas Jones has been seeking the views of Nigel Stanley, head of the TUC's campaigns and communications department, and Liz Chinchen, a TUC press officer who had a key role in the nationwide day of strike action held on November 30 in protest at changes to public sector pensions.
