On April 9, 2003, Baghdad "fell" to US troops. The event was welcomed by a torrent of gushing media coverage. When Saddam's statue was toppled that day in Firdoz Square, the British media unleashed a string of superlatives.

Five years on, we have to ask: why did the media get it so wrong? How can we avoid similar mistakes in the future? How is current coverage of the "war on terror" to be judged?
